Christchurch - Flooding and storm damage

I've just walked around the neighbourhood to look at the results of last night's storm. 'They' say it's the worst storm since 1975 - how they measure these things I don't know - wind speed? amount of precipitation? It certainly seemed to me to be as bad as the 1968 storm, known in NZ as the Wahine storm, because it wrecked the inter-island ferry in Wellington harbour. Driving home last night, the wind was constant, just one big turbulence. Today everything is covered with shredded leaves and vegetation. Took these pictures of the Heathcote River near my house. Fortunately for me, my part of the area is quite high so doesn't flood. I have a theory that when the city was mostly swamp, this was an island in the swamp. The earthquakes have made parts of the city much lower and changed drainage patterns, hence more danger of flooding now

One of the empty sites created by the demolition of a damaged house has been sown with a wildflower mix.

The sun is starting to come out now; hopefully we won't have more of this for some time.

  1. How awful, and how frightening. I hope the sun continues to emerge. And stay. Was there any damage to your home or garden? I do hope not.

    1. No, all is well, damage to the garden only superficial and will grow back again.

    1. Yes, these have not been our city's golden years.

  3. Glad to hear your house was spared. Thank God for small miracles! It pays to watch out though, and to have these Plan Bs to fully prepare for eventualities. Hope those folks have been able to restore their affected houses by now, and have purged their floors and flooded basements.

  4. It is somewhat of a small miracle that your house wasn’t touched by the flood, considering how massive it was! Looking at the pictures, the damage was clearly devastating. If the winds were strong enough to topple trees, they were definitely strong enough to damage roofs along the way. But in the end, I think the flowers budding in that peaceful patch is a reminder that, after a storm, there is always the promise of life and hope.

  5. The whole vicinity really got swamped! But it was good that the flood stayed at a tolerable level. There are times when a simple downpour could sink the whole community. You’re quite lucky that your home was safe during the time the flood had occurred. Anyways, I hope you guys have weathered the storms well. Take care!
